Nallur Murugan Temple

Nallur Murugan temple is one of the most significant Hindu temples in Sri Lanka.  Particularly, the people in Northerner province are proudly said that they have this beautiful Murugan temple in their place. Its history goes back to several centuries. The Nallur Murugan Temple was founded in the year of 948.  According to the YalpanaVaipavaMalai, the temple was developed at the site in the 13th century by PuvenayaVaku, a minister to the Jaffna King KalingaMagha.

Nowadays we can see a new look of this temple. It has been reconstructed and has anornately carved as main entrance with five storied tower (gopuram) in the style of Dravidian architecture. The annual festival of this temple is celebrated in august every year. The significance given to the festival is so unique that it creates the impression of a national festival for the Tamils living not only in the north but also in all over the world. The festival goes on for 25 days and each day has its own significance. Importantly, Nallur annual festival is well known for its religious rituals and the way these are done to at most perfection keeping to a strict time schedule.
